In this Centre, following therapies are practiced for treatment of patients.

          1. Behavior therapy
          2. Counseling
          3. Psychotherapy

1. Behavior therapy: According to Behavior Therapist, behavior is a learned response, whether it is normal or maladaptive. And this learned response is based on principles of learning behavior.

This treatment is training the behavior. This training method is used in treatment of phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder.

In behavior therapy, in certain conditions, thought and emotions are given importance in treatment and this type of behavior therapy is called as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) described by Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck respectively. In this therapy training is given to change the dysfunctional thought.

2. Counseling: The dictionary meaning of this word is, ‘giving advice’. But here the scope of this word is somewhat wide. Nature of problem, sentiments and emotions of the person and his upbringing psycho-social factors etc. are taken into account for counseling. This therapy is useful in the treatment of Distress, Disease, Disability, Difficulty and Disorder. Counseling of one person at a time is called individual counseling. More than one person having the same problems/illness is given the treatment simultaneously and it is called group counseling. In counseling, different principles and philosophies are used. For example, according to Carl Rogers, people are basically good and capable of leading their own life and giving desired shape to it. If it is once understood, person can solve the problems in a better way. By Rogers’s therapy, the level of confidence to change oneself is increased. This therapy is known as client centered counseling.

Psychotherapy: Here again there are three types

a) Supportive psychotherapy: This psychological treatment is used to relive distress; or to help person to cope with difficulties. In this therapy, listening by therapist is very important. Therapy also helps in release of emotions. A therapist gives suggestion and advice and boosts the morale of patient.

b) Interpersonal Psychotherapy: Human relations play important role in the onset of mental illness. Our many problems are because of stressed relations. Reasons for this stress can be:

-            Difference of opinion
-            Change of role in the relation (or due to new relation)
-            Due to break up or death of some near and dear
-            Lack of personal skill in maintaining the relations

This therapy helps in solving the problems in relations.

c) Insight Psychotherapy: Conflicts in the mind causes anxiety and depression. The therapist, by using his skills, brings up suppressed conflicting thoughts and emotions to the level of awareness and realization. Once this realization is achieved, deficiencies are reduced. This therapy helps patient in introspection.

Language is the medium of communication in this therapy. But, for majority of illiterate and many of less literate people this method cannot be used effectively. So also, they cannot give adequate time required for this treatment. Sometimes doctors also cannot give sufficient time. To overcome this, an independent department is established at Shanti Nursing Home –namely – Mind Training Centre – and the work of Counseling is being taken care of regularly here.
